About the Artists
Alexandra Beller is Artistic Director of Alexandra Beller/Dances, which is currently celebrating its tenth anniversary. As a member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company from 1995 to 2001, she performed in over 50 countries and throughout the U.S. In 2004–05 she helped to create The Belle Epoch, (Martha Clarke and Charles Mee). She has been an artist-in-residence at HERE Art Space, Dance New Amsterdam, and DMAC. Beller’s choreography has been presented at Dance Theater Workshop, the 92nd Street Y, Aaron Davis Hall, Danspace Project, Abrons Art Center, Joyce SoHo, PS 122, WAX, HERE, The Connelly Theater, SUNY Purchase College, Dance New Amsterdam, Symphony Space, ICA (Boston), and Jacob’s Pillow. Her company has toured to the Open Look Festival in St. Petersburg, the Bytom Festival in Poland, and throughout Michigan, Massachusetts, and New York. Film work includes Romance and Cigarettes by John Turturro. In 2000, she was the subject of “Dancer,” a series of photographs by Irving Penn.
Amy Cova is Founder/Artistic Director of Amy Cova Dance. Her choreography has been commissioned by numerous institutions, including the Detroit Institute of Art. Cova’s choreography has been performed at Jacob’s Pillow, the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center, The Alvin Ailey Studio Theatre, Triskelion Arts, and The John Ryan Theatre. Cova has been a faculty member/guest artist at the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Wayne State University, Oakland University, and Governor’s School for the Arts (VA). She currently performs with NadiaTykulsker’s Brooklyn-based spark(edit)arts. She is a recipient of The Field’s Emerging Artist Residency 2012.
Maurice Fraga is originally from San Francisco. He has danced with Ben Munisteri Dance, David Parker and the Bang Group, the Kevin Wynn Collection, Michael Foley Dance, Creach/Company, the Tiffany Mills Company, the Mark Morris Dance Group, O Vertigo, and Fluxusdance. His work has been presented at the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center, Merce Cunningham Studio, Movement Research at Judson Church, Dumbo Dance Festival, Cool NY Dance Festival, Next Stage Project, The Hatch, L.I.T., the Performance Garage, The Yard at Martha’s Vineyard, and in Quebec City, Montreal, Barcelona, Taiwan, Ireland, as well as at various universities in the US.
Stanley Love was born in Iowa. He came to New York City when he was 18 to attend the Juilliard School. Stanley Love Performance Group, a company with more than 22 members, was founded in 1992. Since then, SLPG has performed at the Cunningham Studio, DTW, PS 122, The Kitchen, Paula Cooper Gallery, Dixon Place, The Vineyard Theater, The Ohio Theater, Movement Research at Judson Church, Movement Research at Context Studios, The Gershwin Hotel, Tribeca Performing Arts Center at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, Location One, St. Mark’s Church, and many nightclubs.
Sarah Konner received a B.F.A. in dance and a B.S. in environmental science from the University of Michigan. Konner has presented her work at various venues including Dance New Amsterdam, Judson Church, ACDFA Nationals at the Kennedy Center, Triskelion Arts, Urban Research Theater, The A.W.A.R.D Show! Philadelphia, and the Berkshire Fringe Festival. In addition to her own work and collaboration with Austin Selden, Konner has recently danced with Headlong Dance Theater, ChavasseDance&Performance, Olive Prince Dance, Alex|Xan: The Median Movement, Amy Cova, and Megan Kendzior.
Chris Masters has presented his work in New York at Galapagos Art Space, The Stables, Judson Memorial Church, and 100 Grand Performance Space, in Detroit at the Detroit Opera House, Boll Theatre, and 555 Gallery, as well as at the University of Michigan, Albion College, Wayne State University, and the University of Iowa. Masters has performed the work of Martha Clarke, Jeff Rebudal, Colleen Thomas, Stephanie Liapis, Jana Hicks, Keith Thompson, Doug Elkins, and Jan Erkert, among others. He holds a B.S. in dance from Wayne State University and an M.F.A. in choreography from the University of Iowa.
Mari Meade Montoya trained at Haller Classic Ballet, NOCCA (New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts), and University of North Carolina School of the Arts (B.F.A). She started Mari Meade Dance Collective (MMDC) after receiving a Kenan Fellowship at Lincoln Center Institute. Past MMDC performances include Movement Research at Judson Church, The Field’s Emerging Artist Performance at Dance New Amsterdam, Underexposed and NYC10 at Dixon Place, Dumbo Dance Fest at White Wave, Greenline at the 92nd Street Y, Dance Soiree at Alvin Ailey Studios, Asheville Fringe Festival, and a full evening supported by Brooklyn Arts Council at Triskelion Arts.
Sari Nordman makes dances and most recently has performed her work for AUNTS, Columbia University, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Danspace Project, and Dixon Place. She currently works as a dancer with Dean Moss/Gametophyte, Inc. and will perform in his new work at the Museum of Modern Art in October 2012. She has also worked with choreographers Tymberly Canale, Douglas Dunn, Naomi Goldberg Haas, Steve Paxton, Robin Rapoport, Susan Rethorst, and Melinda Ring, among others, as well as visual artist Ming Wong and Avanti! Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. She holds an MFA degree in modern dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Dana Salisbury is a mover and choreographer. Her site-specific performance installations have been performed at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Brooklyn’s Old American Can Factory, and the Lower East Side’s Tenement Museum, for which she received a Bessie Award. Her dances have been performed at PS 122, Judson Church, Dixon Place, University Settlement, the 92nd Street Y, LMCC’s studio on Governor's Island, Performance Mix at Joyce SoHo, and NYC’s library for the visually impaired. Her interest in non-visual perception led her to create Dark Dining Projects in 2005, sensory feasts served to blindfolded guests. Formed in 2009, Salisbury and the No-See-Ums creates dances to be experienced non-visually.
Austin Selden is originally from Farmington Hills, MI. He received his B.F.A. from the University of Michigan and has since performed with Sharp Dance Company, ChavasseDance&Performance, Artichoke Dance Company, Megan Kendzior, and Shen Wei Dance Arts. Selden has collaborated with Sarah Konner on dance and video works since 2007.
Summation Dance Company is a New York City-based modern dance company co-founded by Artistic Director Sumi Clements and Executive Director Taryn Vander Hoop. Both Clements and Vander Hoop received M.F.A. degrees from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Since the spring of 2012, they have self-produced two evening-length works at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, along with creating an educational outreach festival, Dancing Literate Project at Judson Memorial Church. They have presented work in numerous other venues, and have received commissions from DNA’s RAW Material and the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Jillian Sweeney received her MFA in dance from Smith College, where she was also a teaching fellow. Her work has been presented by The Chocolate Factory, HERE Arts Center, and in festivals/showcases around NYC, including Danspace Project's Food For Thought, DanceNOW, MAD, WaxWorks, Dixon Place, and Galapagos Art Space. She co-created and performed in DTW's Community Choreography Challenge videos and recently developed two solo shows, THIS COULD BE IT and IMAGINARY LINES in collaboration with director/writer Jeffrey Cranor. She is currently in residence through LMCC's Swing Space and works at a literary agency in SoHo.
A California native, Jordana Che Toback began her choreographic tutelage under the guidance of the modern dance legend Bella Lewitzky. After graduating from NYU, she was invited to join Mark Morris Dance Group and began touring internationally with the company. Later, as the original choreographer of Fischerspooner, she created the signature cabaret-disco dance style that would help catapult them from the art world to Capitol Records, Ibiza, and beyond. She then returned to her downtown roots staging operettas for Cynthia Hopkins, plays at Harvard’s A.R.T. and NYU, and musicals at FringeNYC, all of which toured extensively. Her dance-theater work has been produced by PS 122, FringeNYC, HERE Art Center, and Dance New Amsterdam, while her infamous “sexy dance” shows (produced by her company POON Productions) have been presented at nightclubs, art galleries, and private events throughout NYC.
Yin Yue was born in Shanghai, China, and studied Chinese classical dance and Chinese ethnic dance at Shanghai Dance School as well as contemporary modern dance at Shanghai Normal University. She has appeared in festivals throughout China and was ranked in the 2005 top ten dancers in the National Contemporary Dance Competition, held in Yunnan. In 2008, Yin Yue graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with an MFA in dance. A finalist and grant recipient in The A.W.A.R.D. Show! 2010: New York City, Yin Yue has performed and presented works at Jacob’s Pillow Inside Out Dance Festival, The New York International Fringe Festival, DanceNOW Festival, Danspace Project’s Food for Thought series, DUMBO Dance Festival, Wave Rising Series, Cool New York Festival, La MaMa Moves, and FAB festival at DMAC-DUO Theater, among others. She founded Yin Yue Dance Company in 2010.
